How to Deposit Checks at an ATM

Master the simple, secure process of depositing checks at any ATM. Gain control over your banking with confidence.

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) offer a convenient way to manage finances, extending banking services beyond traditional branch hours. Depositing checks at an ATM provides flexibility, allowing you to complete transactions at your convenience. This self-service option means you can deposit funds without needing to speak with a teller, making banking more accessible.

Preparing Your Check for ATM Deposit

Before heading to the ATM, prepare your check for a smooth deposit. Endorse the check by signing your name on the back in the designated area. For added security, write “For Deposit Only” below your signature, and consider including your bank account number. This restrictive endorsement helps ensure funds are routed directly to your account.

Gather your debit card and PIN. Confirm the specific account (checking or savings) for the deposit. Finally, ensure the check is flat, unfolded, and free of staples or paperclips, which could cause issues with the ATM’s scanning mechanism.

Depositing Your Check at the ATM

Once at the ATM, the deposit process involves straightforward steps. Insert your debit card and enter your PIN. Navigate the on-screen menu to select “Deposit,” then “Check Deposit.” The ATM will instruct you to insert your endorsed check or checks into the designated slot.

Modern ATMs can often scan multiple checks simultaneously without an envelope. After insertion, the machine displays the scanned image and recognized amount for each check. Verify that the displayed amount matches your deposit total. Once confirmed, select the specific account (checking or savings) for the deposit and finalize the transaction. The ATM will then dispense a printed receipt, serving as immediate proof of your transaction.

After Your ATM Deposit

Upon completing your ATM deposit, retain the printed receipt as a record of the transaction. Funds from an ATM check deposit are generally not available immediately; most banks make funds available within one to two business days. Initial amounts may be available sooner.

The full availability of funds depends on various factors, including the deposit amount, account age, and bank policies. Larger deposits might experience extended hold times. Monitor your account through online banking or your bank’s mobile application to confirm the deposit has fully processed and funds are accessible. It is also advisable to keep the physical check for a few weeks until the funds have completely cleared, in case any issues arise with the deposit.
