How to Combine Gift Cards on PayPal

Learn to effectively use your gift cards on PayPal for purchases. Understand how balances are processed and applied within the system.

While PayPal does not offer a direct feature to combine the monetary value of several gift cards into a single, merged balance, it does provide methods for utilizing these cards for transactions. Understanding how PayPal integrates with gift cards is important for managing your payment options when shopping online. This guide clarifies the operational aspects of using gift cards within the PayPal ecosystem.

How PayPal Processes Gift Cards

PayPal processes gift cards as individual payment instruments, similar to debit or credit cards. For a gift card to be usable on PayPal, it must bear the logo of a major card network, such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover. These network-branded gift cards function as prepaid debit cards and can be linked to a PayPal account. Store-specific gift cards, like those from Amazon or Walmart, cannot be processed through PayPal directly.

Each card retains its individual balance and must be selected or applied separately during the checkout process; their values do not aggregate into one total sum.

Using a Single Gift Card as a Payment Method

Using a single network-branded gift card for a purchase through PayPal is similar to using any other debit or credit card. When checking out on a merchant’s website, select PayPal as your payment option. You will be redirected to the PayPal payment portal, where you can choose to pay directly with a debit or credit card, including a gift card.

To complete the transaction, enter the gift card’s details: card number, expiration date, and the three- or four-digit security code (CVV) found on the back. Ensure the gift card’s balance covers the entire purchase amount, as insufficient funds will result in a declined transaction. You can also link the gift card to your PayPal account beforehand by navigating to the “Wallet” section and selecting “Link a card or bank.”

Managing Multiple Gift Cards for Purchases

Since PayPal does not allow combining gift card balances, individuals with multiple cards need specific strategies. One approach is to use one gift card for a purchase, deplete its balance, and then use another for a subsequent, separate transaction. This ensures each card is fully utilized.

For a single purchase exceeding one gift card’s balance, split payment availability depends on PayPal’s functionality and the merchant’s acceptance. PayPal may offer an option to split a payment between two linked payment methods, such as a gift card and another linked credit card or bank account. This feature’s availability can vary by retailer. If a split payment option is available during PayPal checkout, you can apply the gift card’s balance first and then cover the remaining amount with another funding source. Some online platforms might also allow partial payments if an invoice feature is used, where a seller can enable partial payments, allowing a buyer to use a gift card for a portion and another method for the rest.
