A Universal Account Number (UAN) is a unique 12-digit identifier assigned by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) in India. This number serves as a central point for managing an employee’s various Provident Fund (PF) accounts, which are typically created by different employers. The UAN simplifies tracking contributions and accessing retirement savings, allowing for streamlined management of an individual’s provident fund journey. It remains constant for an employee, linking all their Member IDs under a single umbrella.
To retrieve a UAN, having certain personal and employment details available can expedite the process. The EPF Member ID, a unique identifier assigned by each employer for a specific PF account, is crucial. This ID can typically be found on an employee’s monthly payslip or in their EPF passbook.
The Aadhaar number, a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Indian government, is important for UAN services and verification. The Permanent Account Number (PAN), a unique 10-character alphanumeric identifier, is relevant for linking and verification within the EPFO system.
Your mobile number registered with the EPFO is essential for One-Time Password (OTP) verification. Finally, your date of birth, as recorded with the EPFO, is required to confirm identity.
The official Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) member portal provides a straightforward method for checking or retrieving a UAN. Begin by navigating to the EPFO website and locating the “For Employees” section under “Our Services.” Select “Member UAN/Online Service (OCS/OTCP)” to access the member interface. Within this portal, look for “Know Your UAN Status” or “Know Your UAN” in the important links section.
You will need to input your registered mobile number and a captcha code. Select “Request OTP” to send a One-Time Password to your registered mobile number. Input the received OTP to validate your request and confirm your identity. The system may then prompt you to enter additional information like your name, date of birth, and either your Aadhaar or PAN number for further verification. Once validated, your UAN will be displayed on the screen and may also be sent to your registered mobile number via SMS.
Beyond the online portal, several alternative methods are available to check or retrieve a UAN. One convenient option is the SMS service, where you can send a specific message format from your registered mobile number to a designated EPFO number, typically 7738299899. Sending “EPFOHO UAN” will provide details including your UAN. This service also allows for language preference by adding a three-character language code, such as “EPFOHO UAN ENG” for English.
Another method involves using a missed call service. By dialing 9966044425 from your registered mobile number, the call will automatically disconnect after a few rings. You will then receive an SMS containing your UAN and other EPF account details, provided your mobile number is linked to your EPF account and your KYC details (Aadhaar, PAN, bank account) are updated.
Employers can also provide the UAN to their employees, especially for new hires, as they are typically responsible for generating and providing this number. The UAN is often printed on an employee’s salary slip.
