PayPal generally accepts a variety of common check types, including payroll, government, business, and personal checks. However, certain types of checks are typically not accepted due to their nature or potential for fraud. These include post-dated checks, third-party checks (not made out to the account holder), conditional checks, altered checks, or those that are damaged and unreadable.
Proper endorsement is a requirement for successful check processing. Before taking a photo, the back of the check must be signed by the payee exactly as their name appears on the front of the check. It is also often recommended to write “For Mobile Deposit Only” below the signature to restrict further negotiation of the check. This endorsement ensures that the funds are specifically designated for deposit into the PayPal account.

Selecting the destination for the funds is also part of this step, allowing users to choose whether the money should go into their PayPal balance or a linked bank account.

Funds for standard deposits, which typically take about 10 days to process, are generally fee-free.
There are specific limits on the amount and number of checks that can be cashed. Generally, the maximum per check is $5,000, with a daily limit of $5,000 and a monthly limit of $15,000. However, in certain instances, pre-verified government and payroll checks may be approved for amounts up to $7,500 per transaction. These limits mitigate fraud risks and comply with regulatory guidelines.
All checks submitted are subject to a review process, primarily handled by Ingo Money, PayPal’s service provider for this feature. While many checks are approved quickly, some may be declined for various reasons. Common reasons for a check to be declined include poor image quality, incorrect endorsement, the check being post-dated or otherwise unsupported, or issues with the check writer’s account such as insufficient funds. If a check is declined, the user will be notified, no fee will be charged, and they can then attempt to cash the check elsewhere.
If a check is initially approved and funds are credited, but later returned unpaid by the issuing bank (e.g., due to insufficient funds or a stop payment), PayPal and Ingo Money reserve the right to debit the funds from the user’s PayPal balance or linked account.
