How to Cancel a Subscription in PayPal

Clicking the “Cancel” or “Deactivate” button initiates the cancellation process. PayPal will present a confirmation prompt, asking you to confirm your decision to stop future payments. Review the prompt carefully to ensure you are canceling the correct agreement. Confirming this finalizes the request within PayPal’s system.

Canceling the payment agreement through PayPal stops future deductions but does not necessarily cancel the service itself with the merchant. You may need to directly contact the merchant to formally close your account with them. Preventing future deductions through PayPal is the primary step in regaining financial control over that specific recurring expense.

Verifying Cancellation Status

After initiating the cancellation, confirm the process was successful to ensure no further charges occur. Return to the “Manage your automatic payments” section within your PayPal account and locate the subscription you intended to cancel. The status next to the merchant’s name should now display as “Inactive” or “Canceled.”

Monitor your email inbox for confirmation messages. PayPal sends an email confirming the automatic payment agreement has been canceled. The merchant may also send a separate email acknowledging the cancellation. Retain these confirmation emails for your financial records.

Resolving Common Issues

One common issue is when a subscription is not listed under “Automatic Payments.” This may occur if the recurring payment was established directly with the merchant using your PayPal account as a one-time payment method. In such cases, you must contact the merchant directly to cancel the service and stop future payments.

Another issue can arise if the “Cancel” button is unresponsive or if payments continue after cancellation. First, verify that the payment was established as an automatic payment through PayPal and not through an alternative payment method.

If the issue persists, review the confirmation status within PayPal to ensure it shows as “Inactive” or “Canceled.” If the status is correct but charges continue, gather all relevant documentation, including cancellation confirmations, and contact PayPal support for further assistance, providing them with your transaction details and proof of cancellation.
