Applying the Calculation with Examples

Calculating a percentage pay increase begins by identifying the two key figures: your previous compensation and your current compensation. The first step involves subtracting the old salary ($50,000) from the new salary ($53,000), which yields an increase of $3,000.

Next, divide this $3,000 increase by the original $50,000 salary, resulting in 0.06. Multiplying this decimal by 100 converts it into a 6% pay increase.

Consider another scenario involving an hourly wage. An employee’s hourly rate might have increased from $20.00 to $21.50. The difference, or increase amount, is $1.50 per hour. Dividing this $1.50 by the original hourly rate of $20.00 yields 0.075. Multiplying 0.075 by 100 indicates a 7.5% increase in the hourly wage.

Understanding Gross Versus Net Pay

When discussing a percentage pay increase, it is important to distinguish between gross pay and net pay. Gross pay represents the total earnings before any deductions, such as federal income tax, state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, or other withholdings.
