Preparing Your Prepaid Card
Before linking your card, ensure it is prepared. PayPal accepts prepaid cards with major payment network logos, such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover. Both reloadable and some non-reloadable gift cards with these logos can be used.
Activate your prepaid card, usually by calling the number on the card or visiting the issuer’s website. Register a billing address with the card issuer during activation. This address must precisely match the one you provide to PayPal. Gather your card’s 16-digit number, expiration date, and the 3- or 4-digit security code (CVV/CVC).
Linking Your Prepaid Card to PayPal
Once your prepaid card is activated and you have gathered all necessary information, log into your PayPal account through a web browser or the mobile application. Navigate to the “Wallet” section. Select “Link a Card or Bank,” then choose to link a debit or credit card.
Input the card details: the 16-digit number, expiration date, and security code (CVV/CVC). Provide the billing address registered with your card issuer. Review the details for accuracy. Click “Link Card” or “Add Card” to submit your information.
Confirming and Utilizing Your Card
After linking your prepaid card, PayPal initiates a confirmation process. This involves a small, temporary charge to your card, usually around $1.95 USD. This charge, along with a unique 4-digit PayPal code, will appear on your card statement within two to three business days. If your card issuer provides online access, you might see this code sooner.
Upon locating the 4-digit code on your card statement, return to your PayPal account and navigate back to the Wallet section. Select the prepaid card you just linked and confirm it by entering the code. Once the code is entered, the small charge will be refunded to your card, typically within 30 days. With your prepaid card confirmed, it can be utilized for various transactions through PayPal, including online purchases and sending money to others.
It is important to note that while prepaid cards can fund transactions, it is generally not possible to receive funds directly onto a standard prepaid card via PayPal, as money received usually resides in your PayPal balance. Some prepaid cards may also have specific transaction limits or may not support recurring payments.
