New parents often need to add their newborn to health insurance, a process that can seem complex when awaiting a Social Security Number (SSN). This guide clarifies how to enroll a new baby in health insurance, ensuring continuous coverage from birth even before an SSN is issued.
The arrival of a child is a Qualifying Life Event (QLE) recognized by health insurance providers. This triggers a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), allowing parents to change health coverage outside of standard annual open enrollment. The SEP ensures continuous health coverage for the newborn from their birth date.
For employer-sponsored health plans, this SEP lasts at least 30 days from the child’s birth. For Health Insurance Marketplace plans, the timeframe is 60 days following the birth. Act within this timeframe to ensure the newborn’s coverage is retroactive to their date of birth, meaning all medical care from birth onwards will be covered.
To enroll a newborn, information and documents are necessary, though a Social Security Number is not required initially. You will need the newborn’s full legal name, date of birth, and gender. Your existing health insurance policy number is also important.
Proof of birth is a requirement for enrollment. This can be satisfied with a hospital discharge summary, a birth verification letter from the hospital, or a temporary birth certificate. Hospitals assist with providing these documents upon discharge, which serve as immediate verification of birth while waiting for the official birth certificate.
Once you have gathered the necessary information and proof of birth, contact your health insurance provider or your employer’s human resources department. This begins adding your newborn to your existing policy. You can reach out via phone, an online portal, or by submitting forms via mail.
Many insurers and employers have online forms or portals for reporting life events and submitting documents. If using an online method, you can upload scanned copies of birth verification. After submission, you should receive a confirmation. The insurer may provide a temporary identification number while processing enrollment and issuing a permanent ID card.
Eventually, the newborn’s Social Security Number (SSN) will be needed for tax purposes and official identification. While not required for initial enrollment, apply for an SSN for your child shortly after birth. The easiest method to apply for a newborn’s SSN is through the hospital as part of the birth registration process.
If the SSN was not applied for at the hospital, you can do so with the Social Security Administration (SSA) by completing Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card. This form can be submitted in person at a local SSA office or by mail. Once the SSN is received, provide it to your health insurance provider. This update can be done through their online portal, phone line, or by mailing a copy of the SSN card.
