How to Add a Debit or Credit Card to PayPal

Unlock full PayPal functionality by securely connecting your debit or credit card. Our guide simplifies the entire process from start to finish.

PayPal is a widely used digital payment platform that facilitates online transactions and money transfers. Adding a debit or credit card to a PayPal account offers users increased flexibility for online purchases, sending money to others, and managing their funds. This process enables seamless transactions without repeatedly entering card details for each purchase.

Gathering Required Card Information

Before initiating the card linking process on PayPal, have all necessary card details readily available. Users will need the full 16-digit card number, typically embossed or printed on the front of the debit or credit card. The card’s expiration date, showing the month and year, is also required and can be found on the front of the card.

Another piece of information is the security code, often referred to as the CVV, CVC, or CID. For Visa, Mastercard, and Discover cards, this is a three-digit number located on the back of the card, usually in the signature strip. American Express cards feature a four-digit CID, typically found on the front of the card, above the card number.

The billing address associated with the card must also be prepared, as it needs to precisely match the address on file with the card-issuing bank. Finally, the full name as it appears on the card is also required.

Step-by-Step Guide to Adding Your Card

To begin adding a card, log in to your PayPal account using your registered email address and password. Once logged in, navigate to the “Wallet” section. This section is the central hub for managing payment methods.

Within the “Wallet” section, locate and select the option to “Link a Card” or “Add a new card.” This action will prompt a new screen where you can input your card details. Enter the 16-digit card number into the designated field without any spaces or dashes.

Next, select the correct expiration month and year for your card from the provided dropdown menus. Input the three or four-digit security code into its respective field. Ensure the billing address displayed matches the address linked to your card by your bank, making any necessary adjustments if prompted.

After reviewing all entered information for accuracy, click the “Link Card” button to submit the details. PayPal will then process the information to associate the card with your account. A confirmation message will usually appear, indicating whether the card has been successfully linked.

Verifying Your Card on PayPal

After a card has been successfully linked to a PayPal account, a verification step is often required to fully enable its functionality and lift potential spending limits. This verification process typically involves PayPal making a small, temporary charge to the linked card. This charge, which usually ranges from $1.00 to $1.95, is designed to generate a unique 4-digit code on the cardholder’s statement.

To complete the verification, the user needs to locate this 4-digit code on their card statement. This code can usually be found by checking online banking statements or by waiting for the physical statement to arrive. The temporary charge typically appears on the statement within two to three business days.

Once the code is obtained, return to the “Wallet” section in your PayPal account and select the newly linked card. There will be an option to enter the 4-digit verification code. After inputting the code, the card will be fully verified. The small temporary charge made by PayPal for verification purposes is generally refunded to the card within 24 to 72 hours, or sometimes it is applied as a credit to the PayPal balance.
