Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Payment Schedule

The Social Security Administration (SSA) manages Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, which are based on a recipient’s work history. For individuals who began receiving SSDI benefits after May 1997, payment dates are determined by their birth date. If a recipient’s birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of the month, their payment is issued on the second Wednesday.

Those with birthdays between the 11th and 20th receive their payment on the third Wednesday of the month. For individuals whose birthdays occur between the 21st and 31st, the payment is scheduled for the fourth Wednesday.

If the scheduled payment day falls on a federal holiday, the payment will be made on the preceding business day. Beneficiaries who started receiving SSDI benefits before May 1997, or those who receive both SSDI and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), have their SSDI payment deposited on the third day of the month.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Payment Schedule

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides financial assistance for individuals who have limited income and resources, including those with qualifying disabilities. Unlike SSDI, the payment schedule for SSI is consistent for all recipients. SSI payments are issued on the first day of each month.

However, if the first day of the month falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, the payment date is adjusted. In such cases, the SSI payment is sent on the last business day of the preceding month.

This can sometimes result in two SSI payments being received within the same calendar month, with no payment at the beginning of the following month, as the second payment is an early distribution for the next period. This scheduling detail is important for recipients to consider when planning their monthly budgets.

Veterans Affairs (VA) Disability Payment Schedule

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides disability compensation to veterans with service-connected disabilities. VA disability payments are issued for the previous month’s benefits. These payments are deposited on the first business day of the following month.

For example, a payment for the month of January would be received on the first business day of February. If the first day of the month falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, the payment is advanced to the last business day of the preceding month.

Payment Delivery and Addressing Issues

Disability payments from federal agencies are primarily delivered through electronic methods. Direct deposit into a bank account is the most common and preferred method for receiving benefits. While less common, some recipients may still receive payments via mailed checks.

If a payment is delayed, missed, or appears incorrect, check your bank account or Direct Express card balance to confirm if the payment has posted. Delays can occur due to bank processing times or outdated account information.

For Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments, the Social Security Administration (SSA) advises waiting at least three business days after the scheduled payment date before reporting a missing payment. If the payment is not received, contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213. For Veterans Affairs (VA) disability payments, if a payment is not received, contact the VA at 1-800-827-1000.
