Understanding Gross Pay

For hourly employees, gross pay is calculated by multiplying the hourly wage by total hours worked, including overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate. Salaried employees divide their annual salary by the number of pay periods. Commissions, bonuses, or other supplemental earnings are added to these base amounts to determine the gross earnings for the pay period.

Federal Income Tax and Payroll Contributions

Once gross pay is determined, mandatory federal deductions are applied. Federal income tax is withheld from earnings based on an employee’s Form W-4. This tax operates under a progressive system, meaning higher income levels are subject to higher tax rates, with the amount withheld influenced by income and filing status.

Employees also contribute to Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare. For 2025, the Social Security tax rate for employees is 6.2% of wages, up to an annual wage base limit of $176,100. This contribution supports retirement, disability, and survivor benefits.

Medicare tax has an employee contribution rate of 1.45% on all covered earnings, with no wage base limit. A 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax applies to wages exceeding certain thresholds: $200,000 for single filers, $250,000 for those married filing jointly, and $125,000 for those married filing separately. Employers must withhold this additional tax once an employee’s wages surpass $200,000, regardless of filing status.

Oklahoma State Income Tax

Oklahoma implements its own state income tax. It utilizes a progressive income tax system with six tax brackets, ranging from 0.25% to 4.75%. The specific rate applied depends on an individual’s taxable income level and filing status.

Similar to federal taxes, certain deductions and exemptions, such as a standard deduction and personal exemptions, can reduce the income subject to state tax. Oklahoma does not impose local income taxes. While Oklahoma has State Unemployment Insurance (SUI), this payroll tax is typically an employer contribution and not directly deducted from an employee’s paycheck.

Voluntary Paycheck Deductions

Beyond mandatory federal and state taxes, many paychecks include voluntary deductions. These are amounts an employee chooses to have withheld, often for benefits or savings, and can significantly impact net take-home pay. Health insurance premiums are a common voluntary deduction.

Contributions to employer-sponsored retirement plans, such as 401(k) or 403(b) accounts, are another pre-tax deduction. These contributions allow employees to save for retirement while potentially lowering their current taxable income. Other pre-tax deductions include contributions to Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) or Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), which offer tax advantages for healthcare expenses. Some deductions are taken after taxes are calculated, such as union dues, charitable contributions, or employee loan repayments.

Interpreting Your Pay Stub

Understanding your pay stub helps verify your earnings and deductions. A pay stub typically provides a detailed breakdown of your gross pay, all deductions, and your final net pay for the period. It also includes year-to-date (YTD) totals for both earnings and deductions.

Key sections to review on your pay stub include federal and state tax withholdings, as well as any voluntary deductions. Regularly reviewing this document helps ensure your pay is correct and that appropriate amounts are being withheld for taxes and benefits. Employers generally provide pay stubs, either as a physical document or through secure online portals.
