Florida levies no personal income tax on wages or salaries. This means individuals working in Florida do not have state income tax withheld from their paychecks. The state’s constitution prohibits such a tax, making Florida one of a few states that do not impose an individual income tax. While Florida does not tax individual income, other state-level taxes, such as sales and property taxes, still apply.
Despite the absence of state income tax in Florida, federal income tax remains a mandatory deduction from paychecks. The United States employs a progressive federal income tax system, where higher earners are subject to higher tax rates. The amount of federal income tax withheld from an employee’s pay is determined by information on IRS Form W-4, known as the Employee’s Withholding Certificate.
This form allows employees to inform their employer about their tax situation, including filing status, dependents, and any additional withholding. Employers use this W-4 information to calculate the appropriate federal income tax to deduct and remit to the Internal Revenue Service. Accurately completing this form helps ensure the correct amount of tax is withheld, aiming to avoid a large tax bill or a significant refund.
Beyond federal income tax, employees in Florida are subject to Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare. The employee’s portion for Social Security tax is 6.2% of gross wages, up to an annual wage base limit. For 2024, this limit is $168,600, meaning any earnings above this amount are not subject to Social Security tax. The Medicare tax rate for employees is 1.45% of all covered wages, with no wage base limit. Additionally, an extra Medicare tax of 0.9% applies to wages exceeding certain thresholds, specifically over $200,000 for single filers, $250,000 for married couples filing jointly, or $125,000 for married individuals filing separately. This additional tax is solely the employee’s responsibility and is not matched by the employer.
Several other factors, beyond the primary tax obligations, also influence the final net pay an individual receives. Pre-tax deductions are one such significant element, as they reduce an employee’s taxable income before federal income tax, and often FICA taxes, are calculated. Common examples of pre-tax deductions include contributions to health insurance premiums, 401(k) retirement plans, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). By reducing the gross income subject to taxation, these deductions effectively lower the amount of federal income tax withheld, thereby increasing the take-home pay. The frequency of pay periods also plays a role in how much tax is taken from each paycheck, even though the total annual tax liability remains unchanged. Employees paid weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, or monthly will see their annual earnings divided differently across their paychecks. For instance, a bi-weekly pay schedule results in 26 paychecks per year, meaning that the same annual tax liability is spread over more individual payments compared to a monthly schedule, where earnings are distributed over 12 paychecks.
