This form helps employers determine the appropriate amount of federal income tax to deduct, which is then remitted to the U.S. Treasury. The amount withheld is influenced by factors such as filing status, dependents, and anticipated income or deductions.

Social Security tax, a component of the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax, funds retirement, disability, and survivor benefits. For 2024, the employee contribution rate for Social Security is 6.2% of wages, up to an annual earnings limit of $168,600. Once cumulative earnings exceed this threshold, no further Social Security tax is withheld.

Medicare tax, the other component of FICA, supports healthcare for the elderly and disabled. The Medicare tax rate for employees is 1.45% of all wages, with no annual earnings limit. A 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax is imposed on wages exceeding certain thresholds: $200,000 for single filers, $250,000 for married filing jointly, and $125,000 for married filing separately. These federal deductions ensure resources for national programs and services.

Mandatory Utah State Deductions

In addition to federal obligations, employees in Utah have state-mandated deductions. Utah imposes a flat state income tax on individual earnings, withheld from gross pay. For 2024, Utah’s state income tax rate is 4.55%.

This withholding funds state-level services, including public education, infrastructure, and various government agencies. Similar to federal withholding, the amount deducted for Utah state income tax is influenced by employee-provided information, often through a state-specific withholding form. This state income tax is distinct from federal income tax and is remitted to the Utah State Tax Commission.

Common Voluntary Pre-Tax Deductions

Beyond mandatory deductions, many employees choose voluntary pre-tax withholdings. These deductions reduce an employee’s taxable income, meaning taxes are calculated on a lower gross pay amount. Health insurance premiums are a common example, as many employer-sponsored health plans allow employees to pay their portion with pre-tax dollars. This reduces income subject to federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and state income tax.

Contributions to retirement plans like 401(k)s or 403(b)s are another prevalent pre-tax deduction. Funds contributed to these accounts grow tax-deferred, and contributions are typically deducted from gross pay before taxes are calculated, lowering current taxable income. This provides an immediate tax benefit and encourages long-term savings.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) also fall into this category. FSAs and HSAs allow employees to set aside pre-tax money for qualified medical expenses or, for FSAs, dependent care costs. These accounts provide a tax-advantaged way to pay for eligible out-of-pocket healthcare or childcare expenses.

Common Voluntary Post-Tax Deductions

While pre-tax deductions reduce taxable income, post-tax deductions are withheld after all applicable taxes have been calculated. Contributions to Roth retirement accounts, such as a Roth 401(k) or Roth IRA, are prime examples. These contributions are made with after-tax dollars, meaning the funds have already been subject to income tax.

The benefit of Roth accounts lies in their tax-free withdrawals in retirement, provided certain conditions are met. Another common post-tax deduction involves repayments for loans, such as company loans or loans taken from a 401(k) plan. These repayments are typically deducted directly from net pay.

Wage garnishments represent a specific type of legally mandated post-tax deduction, where a portion of an employee’s wages is withheld to satisfy a debt or legal obligation. These can be for child support, defaulted student loans, or court-ordered judgments. Union dues or professional organization fees, when deducted directly from payroll, are also typically post-tax deductions.

Understanding Your Pay Stub

A pay stub serves as a detailed record of an employee’s earnings and deductions for a specific pay period. It itemizes gross pay, the total amount earned before any deductions. The document then lists all mandatory and voluntary deductions, providing a transparent breakdown of how gross pay is reduced to net pay.

Pay stubs include sections for “Current Deductions,” showing amounts withheld for the immediate pay period, and “Year-to-Date Deductions,” displaying cumulative totals for the year. Federal deductions, such as federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare, are itemized separately from state deductions like Utah state income tax. Voluntary deductions for benefits, retirement contributions, or other items are also itemized, allowing employees to track their contributions.
