This payment is not for the eggs themselves, but rather acknowledges the significant personal investment required. It helps offset expenses like travel to appointments, potential lost wages due to time off work, and any discomfort experienced during the process.
The compensation aims to recognize the donor’s dedication, including the numerous medical appointments and the physical demands of hormone injections and retrieval. Clinics or agencies may also cover certain direct expenses, such as medical costs, travel, accommodations, and a daily meal allowance. Compensation received from egg donation is considered taxable income by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The egg donation journey begins with a series of medical steps. The process starts with the donor taking birth control pills to synchronize her menstrual cycle with the recipient’s. After a few weeks, the donor will begin daily self-injections of fertility medications, such as follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH), for approximately 8 to 12 days. These medications stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs.
Throughout this phase, the donor attends regular monitoring appointments every two to three days, involving ultrasounds and blood tests. These appointments track the growth of the egg follicles and monitor hormone levels. When the eggs reach optimal maturity, a “trigger shot” of hCG is administered, precisely timed to induce final egg maturation.
