Weekly payroll provides the most frequent payments, with employees receiving 52 paychecks per year, on the same day each week. This frequency is common in industries with a high proportion of hourly workers, and it incurs higher administrative costs for businesses. Monthly payroll involves only 12 pay periods per year, with employees paid once a month. This option minimizes administrative effort but offers less frequent income to employees.

Why “Weeks” Isn’t the Right Measure for Semi-Monthly

The question of “how many weeks” are in a semi-monthly payroll is a common point of confusion because it is not based on a fixed weekly interval. Instead, it is tied to specific calendar dates within a month, such as the 1st and 15th. This means the number of days, and consequently the number of weeks, between paychecks can fluctuate.
