GoFundMe provides a platform for individuals to raise funds for various causes. Understanding the process of transferring these collected funds to a personal bank account, including timelines and potential delays, helps campaign organizers manage expectations. This article details the setup requirements, expected transfer durations, and factors that can influence processing times.
Before funds can be transferred, the organizer or designated beneficiary must complete a verification process. This involves confirming identity and linking a valid bank account. For identity verification, individuals typically need to provide a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), along with a government-issued photo ID such as a U.S. driver’s license, state ID, or a non-expired passport. The name provided for personal information must precisely match the name on the identification document and the bank account. A residential address in one of the 50 states and a U.S. phone number are also required.
Linking a bank account involves providing the bank name, account number, and the routing number designated for ACH (Automated Clearing House) or direct deposits. Use a standard checking account, as prepaid debit cards or online payment systems like PayPal or Venmo often do not meet the requirements for direct transfers unless they are true online banks. If manually entering bank details, a bank statement or other bank document verifying the account may be required. This initial setup and verification can take a few business days, up to seven business days, before transfers can begin.
Once the identity and bank account information are fully verified, GoFundMe initiates the transfer of collected funds. Individual donations typically take up to five business days to process before they become available for transfer. After a transfer is initiated by GoFundMe, it takes an additional two to five business days for the funds to be deposited into the linked bank account.
The very first transfer may sometimes experience slightly longer processing times due to initial bank verification procedures. Subsequent transfers, however, usually adhere more closely to the two to five business day window. These timelines refer to “business days,” excluding weekends and public holidays from the calculation.
Several variables can influence how long it takes for GoFundMe funds to reach a bank account, sometimes causing transfers to take longer than the typical timeframe. Different banks have varying internal processing speeds, which can affect the exact deposit time once funds are sent from GoFundMe. Bank holidays and weekends also impact transfer times because interbank transfer mechanisms do not operate on these days. This can delay the final crediting of funds to an account.
Delays can also occur if there are issues with identity or bank account verification, even after initial setup. If additional documents or information are requested by GoFundMe or its payment partners, the transfer process will pause until these requirements are met. Large transfer amounts may trigger additional security checks by either GoFundMe or the receiving bank, potentially leading to slight delays. GoFundMe’s internal fraud prevention measures can place a temporary hold on transfers to ensure the legitimacy of the transaction.
Campaign organizers can monitor the status of their transfers within their GoFundMe account dashboard. The “Transfers” section provides updates, showing initiated transfers under the “Activity” tab and donations still processing under the “Breakdown” tab. A red banner on the “Transfers” page indicates if additional information or documents are needed for verification.
If a transfer seems delayed, check recent bank statements to confirm if funds have arrived. Re-verify that the bank account details entered on GoFundMe are accurate and that all required verification steps have been completed. If these checks do not resolve the issue, contact GoFundMe’s customer support. Support is available through the Help Center, via email, or live chat, as GoFundMe does not offer phone support.
