For instance, adding copper can create a reddish hue, while palladium or silver can result in white gold. The karat system measures gold purity in parts out of 24, where 24K represents pure gold. Therefore, 18K gold means 18 parts pure gold and 6 parts other metals, achieving a balance between high gold content and practical strength for everyday wear.

Identifying Gold Hallmarks

Authentic gold items, including 18K pieces, bear specific markings known as hallmarks. These stamps provide information about the gold’s purity, origin, and sometimes the manufacturer. For 18K gold, common hallmarks include “18K,” “18KT,” or “18Kt,” indicating 18 parts pure gold.

Another frequently seen mark is “750,” which denotes 750 parts per thousand of pure gold, equivalent to 75% purity. The magnet test is a simple initial check, as pure gold is not magnetic. To perform this test, bring a strong magnet close to the gold item; if the item is attracted to the magnet, it likely contains magnetic metals and is not pure gold. However, some non-magnetic metals are also used in fake gold, so a lack of attraction does not guarantee authenticity.

A weight or density test leverages gold’s high density. While precise measurements require specialized equipment, a real gold item will feel notably heavy for its dimensions, offering a general sense of its density. For a more structured approach, weigh the item, then submerge it in water in a graduated cylinder to measure its displaced volume. Dividing the item’s weight by its volume will give you its density, which for 18K gold should be around 15-16 g/cm³.

The ceramic or unglazed tile scratch test is another effective method. Gently rub the gold item across an unglazed ceramic surface, such as the back of a tile or a ceramic plate. Real 18K gold will leave a visible golden or yellow streak on the ceramic. If the streak is black, gray, or leaves no mark, the item is likely not genuine gold.

A skin discoloration test can offer an additional indicator. While pure gold generally does not react with skin, alloys in fake or lower-karat gold can cause discoloration. If wearing the item causes your skin to turn green, black, or blue, it may suggest the presence of other metals that react with sweat or skin oils. This test is less conclusive.

This provides a precise karat reading and detailed information about the metal’s makeup.
