Semi-monthly pay refers to a payment schedule where employees receive their wages two times each month. These payments usually occur on fixed dates, such as the 1st and the 15th, or the 15th and the last day of the month. This consistent schedule means there are always 24 pay periods within a year.
This pay frequency differs from bi-weekly pay. Bi-weekly pay means employees are paid every two weeks, which results in 26 paychecks per year. While semi-monthly pay provides payments on specific calendar dates, bi-weekly pay typically results in paychecks on the same day of the week, such as every other Friday. The number of paychecks directly impacts how gross pay is calculated and how deductions are spread throughout the year.
Calculating gross semi-monthly pay depends on whether an employee is salaried or hourly. Gross pay is the amount an employee earns before any deductions are subtracted.
For salaried employees, the calculation is straightforward: divide the annual salary by 24. For example, an employee with an annual salary of $60,000 would have a gross semi-monthly pay of $2,500 ($60,000 / 24).
For hourly employees, determining gross semi-monthly pay requires calculating the total hours worked within the semi-monthly period and multiplying that by their hourly rate. Accurate time tracking is important.
If an hourly employee works 40 hours per week, their annual hours would be 2,080 (40 hours/week 52 weeks/year). To find their average semi-monthly hours, divide 2,080 by 24, which is approximately 86.67 hours. If their hourly rate is $20, their gross semi-monthly pay would be around $1,733.40 ($20 86.67).
After calculating gross pay, various deductions are subtracted to arrive at net pay, which is the actual take-home amount. These deductions fall into two main categories: mandatory and voluntary.
