The U.S. Post Office does not provide blank 1099 forms for individuals to fill out, nor do they distribute the pre-filled 1099 forms that individuals receive for tax purposes. These income reporting documents are issued by specific entities, not through postal branches or federal agencies directly.
Form 1099 serves as an information return used to report various types of income received by individuals, other than standard wages, salaries, or tips reported on a W-2. These forms help the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) track income from diverse sources. Common examples of income reported on 1099s include payments for independent contractor work (Form 1099-NEC), interest income (Form 1099-INT), and dividend earnings (Form 1099-DIV). Government payments and other miscellaneous income can also be reported on various 1099 series forms.
Businesses, financial institutions, and government agencies issue these forms to individuals who have received payments from them throughout the year. The issuer sends one copy to the recipient and another to the IRS, which helps verify that both parties report the same income amount. These forms solely report income received and are distinct from documents used for claiming tax deductions or credits.
Individuals receive their 1099 forms directly from the entity that made the payment, known as the payer. Payers mail these forms to the recipient’s last known address, often by the January 31st deadline for most forms. Many organizations also offer secure online portals where recipients can access and download their 1099 forms digitally.
If a 1099 form is expected but not received by mid-February, contact the payer directly to inquire about its status. Checking online accounts associated with the payer is also advisable, as digital copies may be available. All income earned must be reported on an individual’s tax return, even if a 1099 form is not received. If direct contact with the payer does not resolve the issue, and the payer remains unresponsive or refuses to provide the form, individuals may then seek assistance from the IRS.
While the Post Office does not provide pre-filled 1099 forms, other blank federal tax forms can be obtained through different channels. The IRS website, IRS.gov, is the primary source for downloading blank forms, such as Form 1040 and its accompanying schedules. Many public libraries offer a selection of common blank federal tax forms, and some Post Office branches may carry a small assortment during tax season. This availability of blank, fillable forms is separate from the specific, pre-filled income reporting 1099 forms.
