To qualify, students must be U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens, enrolled in an eligible degree or certificate program, and have not yet earned a bachelor’s or professional degree. Maintaining satisfactory academic progress at their institution is also a requirement to continue receiving funds.

A key aspect of the Pell Grant is its broad coverage of educational expenses, which directly includes costs like books and supplies. Federal guidelines define the Cost of Attendance (COA) for a student, encompassing direct costs such as tuition and fees, along with indirect costs like room and board, transportation, and personal expenses, including books and supplies. This comprehensive definition ensures that the grant can be applied to a wide array of necessary educational materials beyond just tuition. Students can use Pell Grant funds to purchase textbooks, notebooks, specialized equipment, and other items required for their courses.

How Pell Grant Funds Are Disbursed and Utilized

Pell Grant funds are typically disbursed directly to the student’s college or university, rather than directly to the student. The institution first applies these funds to the student’s direct institutional charges, which include tuition, mandatory fees, and potentially on-campus room and board if provided by the school. This process ensures that the primary educational costs are covered first.

Should the Pell Grant amount exceed these direct charges, a “credit balance” or “refund” is generated on the student’s account. The school is required to disburse any remaining credit balance to the student within a specific timeframe, often within 14 days after the funds are credited to the account. Students can then access these remaining funds through various methods, such as direct deposit to a personal bank account, a check, or sometimes through a campus-specific system for purchasing books and supplies at the university bookstore. These refunded amounts can then be used to cover other eligible educational expenses, including the purchase of books and supplies, off-campus living expenses, or transportation costs.

Factors Affecting Your Pell Grant Amount

The amount of a Federal Pell Grant varies based on financial and enrollment factors. A primary determinant is the student’s Student Aid Index (SAI), which replaced the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) starting with the 2024-2025 award year. This index is calculated from FAFSA information, considering the student’s and their family’s income, assets, and household size.

The Cost of Attendance (COA) at the chosen institution also plays a role in determining the grant amount, as does the student’s enrollment status (full-time or part-time). The maximum Pell Grant award for the 2025–2026 award year is $7,395, though the actual amount received can be lower depending on these variables.
