The Membership Dividend

The primary financial perk of an REI Co-op membership is the annual Co-op Member Reward. This reward is typically 10% back on eligible full-price purchases made by members throughout the year. While 10% is common, the reward is not guaranteed and depends on the cooperative’s profitability.

Certain purchases do not qualify for the reward. Exclusions include REI Outlet items, sale, clearance, discounted, and used gear. Service fees like rentals, labor, or shop services, along with gift cards, memberships, and charges for classes or events, are not eligible. The reward is based on net eligible purchases. Members typically receive notification of their accumulated reward in March for the previous calendar year.

Becoming an REI Member

Joining the REI Co-op requires a one-time lifetime membership fee of $30. This grants immediate access to all membership benefits without annual renewals or additional dues. The membership is designed to be a long-term investment, paying for itself over time through various savings and perks.

Prospective members can sign up online through the REI website or in person at any REI retail location. When joining online, the membership fee can be added to a shopping cart, and upon completion of the purchase, a new member number is typically issued via email. This process ensures that new members can promptly begin utilizing their benefits.

Redeeming Your Member Dividend

The Co-op Member Reward is made available to members each March, with notifications typically sent via mail or email. Members can check their reward balance by logging into their online REI account or by providing their member information at any REI store. The reward functions as store credit and can be applied to future purchases.

Members can redeem the reward for purchases made online through REI.com or at any physical REI store location. When shopping in-store, members simply provide their member details at checkout to apply the reward. For online purchases, the reward can be selected as a payment option during the checkout process. Co-op Member Rewards earned in 2022 and beyond cannot be redeemed for cash or check. These rewards generally have an expiration date, typically in early January, approximately two years after they were issued.
