Some financial institutions also participate in shared ATM networks, such as Allpoint or Plus, which allow deposits at partner ATMs. However, depositing a check at an ATM unaffiliated with your bank is not possible. Independent ATMs lack the direct, secure connection to your bank’s processing center needed to verify check validity and securely credit your account.
Before depositing a check at an ATM, preparation ensures a smooth transaction. Properly endorsing the check is a first step; this involves writing “For Deposit Only” on the back, followed by your signature and your bank account number. This endorsement helps prevent fraudulent cashing of the check and directs the funds to your specific account.
Ensuring the check’s validity is important: the date must be current, the payee’s name correct, and the numerical and written amounts must match precisely. The remaining balance is subject to a longer hold period, ranging from one to two business days for local checks, or five to seven business days for non-local or larger amounts.
