Can You Add Money to Chime With a Debit Card?

Learn how to easily add money to your Chime account using diverse funding options tailored for convenience.

Chime operates as a financial technology company, providing mobile-first banking services. This article aims to clarify how money can be deposited, including the specific role of your Chime debit card and transfers from other financial institutions.

Adding Cash Using Your Chime Debit Card

You can deposit cash into your Chime account at various retail locations across the United States. These partners include major chains like Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, and 7-Eleven, among over 75,000 participating stores. To complete a cash deposit, you will need to bring your cash and your Chime Visa® Debit Card to the store.

Inform the cashier that you wish to make a cash deposit to your Chime account. Hand over the cash. The cashier will typically require you to swipe or scan your Chime debit card. It is important to note that the debit card used for this process is your Chime-issued card, not a debit card from an external bank. Once the transaction is confirmed by the cashier, the funds are usually available in your Chime account within minutes, though some deposits may take up to two hours to fully process.

Transferring Funds from External Bank Accounts

This process typically utilizes Automated Clearing House (ACH) transfers. To initiate such a transfer, you first need to link your external bank account to your Chime account through the Chime app or website.

Linking an account often involves providing the external bank’s routing number and your specific account number. Chime frequently partners with secure services like Plaid to facilitate this connection, allowing you to log in directly to your external bank through the Chime platform for verification. Alternatively, some linking processes may involve small micro-deposits that Chime sends to your external account, which you then verify within the Chime app. Once linked, you can initiate a transfer from your external account to your Chime Checking Account. It is important to understand that while you might associate your external bank account with its debit card, the actual transfer of funds is an electronic bank-to-bank transfer, not a direct transaction using your external debit card’s number.

Understanding Deposit Limits and Fees

For cash deposits made at retail locations, daily limits typically range around $1,000, with monthly limits often set at $10,000. While Chime itself does not charge fees for cash deposits, the retail partner facilitating the deposit may impose a small fee, often a few dollars per transaction. Walgreens and Duane Reade locations are notable exceptions, as they generally offer fee-free cash deposits to Chime accounts.

Transfers from external bank accounts via ACH generally do not incur fees from Chime, though your external bank may have its own policies regarding outbound transfers. Processing times for these ACH transfers typically range from 2 to 5 business days. It is advisable to check your specific deposit limits within the Chime app, as these can vary based on your account history and activity.
