Can I Use an Online Gift Card in Store?

Can you use your online gift card in a physical store? Learn the factors, how to verify eligibility, and steps for in-store redemption.

Using an online gift card at a physical retail location is not always possible. Its usability depends on the retailer’s operational structure and the specific characteristics of the gift card.

Factors Determining In-Store Use

A key factor for in-store redemption is the retailer’s policy and their “omnichannel” system. Retailers with an integrated omnichannel approach allow digital gift cards to be used interchangeably online and in stores. Conversely, businesses with separate online and in-store systems may restrict the use of digitally issued cards in physical locations.

The type of gift card also influences usability. Store-specific digital gift codes, or closed-loop cards, are issued by a particular retailer and can only be used within that retailer’s ecosystem. General-purpose digital gift cards, like those from Visa or Mastercard, function as debit cards and are widely accepted where their network is processed. The store’s point-of-sale (POS) system must also be compatible with digital codes, either by scanning a barcode from a mobile device or printout, or by allowing manual entry of the card number and PIN.

How to Determine Eligibility

To determine if an online gift card is valid for in-store purchases, first review its terms and conditions. These details are often provided in the email where the digital card was received or on the retailer’s website. Information regarding in-store usability, including limitations or specific instructions, is usually outlined there.

Examine the digital gift card for explicit markings or logos indicating in-store acceptance. If terms remain unclear, contact the retailer’s customer service for clarification. You can also inquire with a store associate before attempting a purchase to confirm the current policy.

Using Your Online Gift Card In-Store

Once confirmed eligible for in-store use, the redemption process is straightforward. Present the digital code to the cashier by displaying it on your smartphone or providing a printed copy. The cashier will attempt to scan a barcode or QR code directly from your device or printout.

If scanning is not successful, the cashier may manually enter the gift card number and any accompanying PIN into the POS system. In situations where the gift card balance does not cover the full purchase amount, you can often use the remaining balance and pay the difference with another form of payment.
