Can I Put a Gift Card on My PayPal Account?

Explore how to use eligible gift cards as a payment method within your PayPal account for online shopping.

It is generally not possible to load a gift card directly onto your PayPal account balance. However, specific types of gift cards can be used as a payment method during the PayPal checkout process, similar to a credit or debit card. The ability to use a gift card with PayPal depends on the card’s network and how it integrates with online payment systems.

Understanding Gift Card Compatibility

Gift cards are broadly categorized into two main types: open-loop and closed-loop, each with distinct compatibility for online transactions, including those made through PayPal. Open-loop gift cards are those branded with major payment network logos such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover. These cards operate on the respective credit and debit card networks, allowing them to be used almost anywhere those brands are accepted, both online and in physical stores. Their functionality mirrors that of a standard debit or credit card, making them generally compatible with PayPal as a payment method.

In contrast, closed-loop gift cards are issued by specific merchants or a limited group of affiliated businesses, such as a particular retail store or restaurant chain. These cards can only be redeemed at the issuing merchant’s locations or their designated online store. Since they do not operate on major payment networks, closed-loop gift cards cannot typically be added to a PayPal account or used directly for PayPal transactions. The only scenario where a closed-loop gift card might indirectly facilitate a PayPal purchase is if the specific merchant where the gift card is valid also accepts PayPal as a payment option for their goods or services.

For open-loop gift cards to function effectively for online purchases, including those through PayPal, they often require registration with the card issuer. This registration typically involves associating a billing address with the card. Without a registered billing address, online transactions may be declined by payment processors that use Address Verification Service (AVS) to prevent fraud.

Using Your Gift Card for PayPal Purchases

To use a compatible gift card for PayPal purchases, you must first add it to your PayPal account as a payment method. This process is similar to linking a standard credit or debit card. You can typically navigate to the “Wallet” or “Link a Card” section within your PayPal account, either through the website or the mobile application.

Once in the appropriate section, select the option to link a debit or credit card. You will then be prompted to manually enter the gift card details, which include the 16-digit card number, the expiration date, and the three- or four-digit Card Verification Value (CVV) code, usually found on the back of the card. After entering the required information, you can complete the linking process.

With the gift card successfully linked to your PayPal account, it becomes an available payment option during online checkout. When making a purchase on a website that accepts PayPal, select PayPal as your payment method. After logging into your PayPal account, you can then choose the linked gift card from your list of payment sources to complete the transaction. It is important that the gift card has sufficient funds to cover the entire transaction amount, as PayPal generally requires the full payment to be covered by the selected method.

Practical Tips for Gift Card Transactions

Before attempting to use a gift card with your PayPal account, it is advisable to check its current balance. This step helps confirm that the card has adequate funds for the intended purchase and can prevent transaction declines. Most gift card issuers provide a toll-free phone number or a website where you can easily check the balance.

For online transactions, many open-loop gift cards require prior registration with the issuer. This registration process typically involves associating your name and a billing address with the card. If the gift card is not registered, or if the billing address entered during checkout does not match the one registered with the card, the transaction may be declined due to security protocols. You can usually register the card by visiting the issuer’s website or calling the customer service number provided on the card.

If a purchase amount exceeds the gift card’s balance, PayPal may allow a split payment, enabling you to use the remaining gift card funds and cover the difference with another linked payment method, such as a debit or credit card. However, not all merchants or payment scenarios support this functionality. To utilize small remaining balances, consider using the gift card for a portion of a larger purchase or for smaller online transactions where the exact amount can be debited.
