PayPal, a digital payment platform, allows users to deposit paper checks directly through its mobile application. This integrates traditional banking tasks into a convenient digital environment.
Depositing a paper check into your PayPal account is a straightforward process using the PayPal mobile application. Users need a smartphone with a camera and the app installed. The check must be properly endorsed before digital capture.
To endorse the check, sign your name on the back within the designated area. Underneath your signature, write “For PayPal Deposit Only” or “For mobile deposit only” to ensure correct processing. Adding your PayPal email address for verification is optional.
Once endorsed, open the PayPal app and locate the “Cash a Check” feature. Enter the check amount and use your phone’s camera to take clear photos of both the front and back of the endorsed check. Ensure all details are legible and the check is on a flat surface. After reviewing and confirming the details, submit the deposit for processing.
After submitting a check through the PayPal app, deposit limits and fund availability apply. PayPal sets limits on the amount that can be deposited. For most users, the maximum amount per single check is typically $2,500.
Daily limits are up to $5,000 and monthly limits are $15,000. These limits can vary based on account history, verification status, and usage patterns; verified accounts may have higher thresholds.
For fund availability, users have two options. A standard processing option is free, with funds credited within 10 calendar days if the check clears. An instant deposit option provides funds within minutes for a fee: 1% for government and payroll checks, and 5% for other accepted check types, with a minimum fee of $5. Eligibility requires a verified PayPal Balance account in good standing.
Once funds are available in your PayPal balance, users have several options. Funds can be used directly for online transactions, such as purchases with merchants or sending money to other individuals. This allows for immediate use within the PayPal ecosystem.
Funds can be transferred to an external bank account. A standard transfer to a linked bank account typically takes 1 to 3 business days and does not incur a fee. An instant transfer option to a linked debit card or bank account is also available, depositing funds within minutes for a fee.
Users with a PayPal Debit Mastercard can access funds directly from ATMs. The daily ATM withdrawal limit is typically $400 to $500. While some ATMs may charge a fee, withdrawals at MoneyPass ATMs in the U.S. do not incur a surcharge from PayPal.
