This document, issued by an employer, itemizes an employee’s gross pay, deductions, and net pay for a specific work period.

A pay stub includes the pay period dates, employee’s name and address, and employer’s name and address. It shows gross wages, the total amount earned before deductions. This may detail hours worked, hourly rates, salary, and additional earnings like bonuses or commissions.

Deductions are itemized, showing amounts withheld for federal income tax, which is based on an employee’s W-4 form. State income tax is also withheld where applicable. Social Security and Medicare taxes, collectively known as FICA taxes, are mandatory deductions.

Pre-tax deductions, such as health insurance premiums or contributions to a 401(k) retirement plan, reduce taxable income. Post-tax deductions, like wage garnishments or Roth 401(k) contributions, are taken from income after taxes have been calculated.
